I remember the Hilux Top Gear episode where they try to destroy it to no avail, and Clarkson made the interesting point...that the reason why Toyota pickups are used are because of their overall capability, durability, and prevalence.

I think that was the first time the use of Toyotas as “technicals” came into the popular consciousness. Since then, its almost become cliche to refer to a diesel Toyota truck as having “warlord grade” reliability.
